Local list

What is a local list?

Camden’s local list identifies historic buildings, spaces and features that are valued by the local community. They also help give Camden its distinctive identity.

The list identifies parts of the historic environment that are not already designated in another way. For example an unlisted building which still adds to a sense of place, local character and civic pride.

The local list:

  • provides a list of non-designated heritage assets within Camden and describes what is important about them
  • helps to develop a better understanding of what local communities consider to be important in their local historic environments
  • celebrates the rich variety of features that give Camden its unique qualities

The adopted local list

The Local List was adopted on 21 January 2015.

All buildings on the local list must meet our selection criteria (PDF)

What does it mean to be on the local list?

  • items on the local list are identified as non-designated heritage assets.  As such, their significance will be taken into account in planning decisions
  • it will be presumed that it is important to preserve the significance of a non-designated heritage asset. This will be balanced against other material considerations when assessing a planning application
  • being on the local list is not the same as being a listed building. Listed building consent application will not be required
  • inclusion on the local list will not affect permitted development rights. However, we may consider introducing an Article 4 direction to remove some or all permitted development rights
  • planning permission applications for works affecting a local list item must show that the design has considered the asset's significance.

Review

The published local list will be reviewed and updated from time to time.
