Crane Operations and Crane Oversail

A licence is required under Section 169 of the Highways Act 1980, to place a crane on the public highway or oversail the highway with a crane. 

Crane operations include using a:

  • crane
  • cherry picker
  • scissor lift
  • mewp
  • any type of mobile elevated working platform

Our Network Management Team processes all applications except those on Red Routes which are licenced by Transport for London (TfL).

Application fee

The fee to process a Crane Operation Application is:

Crane Operation Licence Level 1: £438.12 / Level 2: £670.66

Step 2: Print off the pack and fill in the application form, referring to the guidelines where necessary

Step 4: Refer to the terms and conditions as there are certain conditions that you will need to meet leading up to the start of your work; some of these need to be completed up to 6 weeks before you start works
