As part of the first phase of the Tybalds estate redevelopment, we’ve worked closely with the local community to build 10 brand-new social rent homes, six of which have been designed for wheelchair users.
These high-quality apartments were built by modifying existing buildings on the estate. Some have provided new homes for residents already living on the estate in need of a wheelchair-friendly living environment or those looking to downsize, helping to increase availability of family-sized council homes on the estate.
We caught up with Jo to hear how her family has been settling into their new home, and how they’re planning to spend their first festive holiday there.
Jo said: “My family of four has been living on the Tybalds estate since 2010 but began to outgrow our last property. Three out of four of us have additional needs and health conditions, and we really needed a larger home to help improve our living conditions.”
“We’ve been on the waiting list for a while and were even considering moving out of London. When this property on the same estate came up, my husband and I couldn’t believe it. We haven’t needed to switch GPs or schools and we’re still near to extended family who live close by.
“Our new home has had a huge positive impact on our physical and mental health, making our health conditions and additional needs easier to manage. It really feels like a dream come true.”
“We are really looking forward to the festive break. I’m excited to open presents with the family, have a delicious Christmas breakfast and eat lots of cookies!”
To mark the completion of these new homes we were joined by local ward councillors, members of the local TRA’s, and those pivotal in the project delivery including Camden colleagues, the contractor, Quinn, and Matthew Lloyd Architects for a tour of the finished site.
These new homes were built through Camden’s Community Investment Programme, our plan to build new homes, meet housing needs and improve living conditions, as well as provide community spaces across the borough.
So far, we’ve built over 1,700 new homes, 70% of which are affordable. Our vision for the future of Camden is that everyone in the borough should have a place to call home, a place that provides them with a foundation to thrive – and we’re well on our way to meeting our goal of building 4,850 new homes and transforming lives across Camden.
