Following a consultation, Residents on the Agar Grove estate have chosen to name their future new apartment block, currently being built as part of the wider estate redevelopment, after a notable figure within Camden’s history: Oliver Heaviside.

Born in Camden, Oliver Heaviside grew up in poverty and became deaf after contracting scarlet fever. He went on to become one of the most important scientists in the fields of electromagnetic theory and telecommunications. Today, 3 February 2025, marks 100 years since his passing.

Naming buildings after eminent figures in Camden’s history is a part of our Strategy for Diversity in the Public Realm which sets out to make our open spaces more balanced, accessible and representative of our communities.

Oliver Heaviside House is part of Phase 2a of the ongoing estate redevelopment, delivered through our ambitious Community Investment Programme (CIP). Once complete it will provide 94 affordable council homes to tackle overcrowding on the estate, a new community hall and a range of outdoor and play spaces.

The building was designed in the vision of local residents who requested being rehoused in a high-rise building complete with a concierge service.

As construction continues on-site, this brings us one step closer to providing spacious, green, and affordable new homes that meet our residents’ needs on the Agar Grove estate.
